She certainly knows how to make an entrance! Geri Halliwell ensures she's the star of the show as she arrives for first day of X Factor auditions
It hasn’t taken the new guest judge
long to learn the first rule of being a woman on X Factor – always try
to upstage your female counterpart.
But given that the person in question is Geri Halliwell, that’s hardly surprising.
The former Spice Girl seemed to have lost none of her talent for showing off when she arrived at filming in Liverpool yesterday, armed with a megaphone and a very short hemline.
Her dramatic entrance was topped off by an encounter with a policeman, who stopped her car after spotting a cameraman inside without a seatbelt.
Fellow judge Tulisa Contostavlos, 23, looked almost muted in comparison, in a pretty floral dress and red high heels.
But she seemed keen to show she will get on rather better with Miss Halliwell than she did with former judge Kelly Rowland.
She was spotted sitting on Miss Halliwell’s knee as the pair enjoyed a night out in Liverpool on Tuesday, and later said: ‘I think she’s a right hoot.
‘She definitely had me in stitches…She was sitting next to me and had her arm round me. We were female bonding.’
Miss Halliwell, who is hoping to become a permanent show judge alongside Miss Contostavlos, Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh, insisted she wasn’t anxious about being ‘on audition’ – and compared herself to the Beatles.
The mother of one said: ‘In life we’re all on audition. The Prime Minister is auditioning right now.
‘We are all proving ourselves every single day of our lives. Between me and Gary we’ve had 22 number ones. That’s as much as the Beatles. But we’re still proving ourselves in this game. That is the industry.’
Miss Halliwell has joined the show following the departure of Miss Rowland, and after former judge Dannii Minogue refused a £1million offer to return.
She will no doubt be hoping to better her first X Factor appearance in 2010, when she was booed by audiences as she stood in for a pregnant Miss Minogue.
The singer was booed again when she first arrived at the auditions in Liverpool yesterday, but tried to appease fans by claiming her father came from the city and she was therefore a Liverpudlian.
She also declared: ‘It’s the art of the show to take a really big fat boo. It’s really good for you not to take it personally.
‘Of course they’re going to boo as they’re protecting their friends.’
Barlow said he thought his new colleague would be ‘great’ – but admitted she might not appeal to all viewers.
‘I think she’ll be one of those people that other people will either love or hate,’ he said.
She wore her strawberry blonde hair short and curly for the occasion, and left her make-up minimal.
And with Geri's antics as she made her entrance, the rest of the X Factor judges stood no chance of competing with the former Spice Girls star in the attention stakes.
Tulisa opted for a cute and flirty floral Lipsy minidress, cinched in at the waist with a studded black belt.
She
topped off the outfit with a pair of red heels, also going for curly
hair as she posed for photographers outside her hotel before heading to
the auditions.
The Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack also went for a floral look - changing up her usual shorts for a flirty skater-style skirt with a black vest top and peep-toe heels.
Meanwhile, Louis Walsh also changed up his look for this year's auditions, switching his usual slicked down hair for a more trendy gelled look.
It was reported earlier this week that Geri - who previously appeared on a episodes of the show as a guest judge at the audition stages in 2010 - would be acting as one of a number of stand-ins for Dannii Minogue, who pulled out of negotiations to return to the show last week.
Other stars believed to be lined up include Robbie Williams, Tinie Tempah, Gwen Stefani and Alicia Keys.
It
remains to be seen how Geri does on the show this time around, as her
last go on the panel in Glasgow in 2010 saw her get booed by the
audience.
However it is hoped the change in judging panel last year to include Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos could mean she will fair better this time.
A source told The Sun: 'This is a new panel and Geri might have better chemistry with them. Guest stars bring excitement but they are also a gamble.'
Dannii reportedly snubbed a £1 million offer to return to the show after she wanted more money due to the recent revelations Simon Cowell had a brief fling with her.
