It's about creating a fantasy' Victoria's Secret Angel Erin Heatherton defends airbrushing (but what about those Photoshop fails)

Victoria's Secret Angel, Erin Heatherton, has defended the way Photoshop is used to slim down models' bodies, stating that it helps make 'things look beautiful'.
Tackling the subject of airbrushing, the 5'11" blonde told Fashionista: 'We’re not selling reality; we’re selling a story. It’s all about creating this fantasy.'
She added that schools and parents, not the media, should be the ones responsible for helping children understand what a positive body image is, and how images are often manipulated.

Miss Heatherton, 23, explained: 'I think that’s something that children should be taught by their parents, it should be taught in schools.
'Healthy body image is not something that you’re going to learn from fashion magazines... retouching is an essential part of our job.'

Instances of Photoshop gone wrong, or Photoshop fails, have meant that the public have become increasingly aware of how images in the media are heavily edited,
Missing limbs, and waists slimmed to impossible proportions, have prompted outrage from consumers and eating disorder campaigners.
Victoria's Secret found itself at the centre of a backlash surrounding the reported use of Photoshop in its swimwear online catalogue.book this spring.

One shopper wrote on the company's Facebook page: ‘PHOTOSHOP!!!! That’s not possible for a normal woman. And it looks terrible. I feel sorry for the model you’re degrading by touching up her photo. Im sure she looked fine before.’
But Miss Heatherton, who is currently dating Leonardo DiCaprio, branded all criticism over airbrushing as a 'waste of time', adding: 'No one is perfect - we all know that... Photoshop makes things look beautiful.'
However, she agreed that slimming down models to inhuman proportions is 'not a fair message'.

Miss Heatherton described that it is up to the pubic to know the difference between what is Photoshopped and what is not.
She likened it to realising when someone is wearing make-up, and knowing when they are fresh faced.
'I think it’s people’s own prerogative to be able to look at something and know the difference,' she added.
Her recent comments will no doubt upset those in the anti-Photoshop camp. Earlier this year Julia Bluhm, 14, staged a protest outside Seventeen magazine's New York office to protest the publication's fervent use of airbrushing.
Miss Bluhm said during the protest: 'I know much how much pictures in the media have an effect in the self esteem of girls and their body image.'
