Matthew McConaughey shows off his drastic weight loss at Killer Joe screening in New York
While his new wife Camila is gaining
weight due to her pregnancy, it appears Matthew McConaughey is going in
the opposite direction.
The actor appeared noticeably thinner as he arrived with his wife at the New York screening of his new film Killer Joe last night.
The normally beefy Texan has lost over 15lbs already and is planning to lose another 15 to play an HIV patient in his new film.
Wearing a blue suit last night, the
42-year-old's face was thinner and he had lost his usual muscley frame.
His slim physique was a far cry from the rippled muscles he sported on his latest release Magic Mike, in which he plays a stripper.
Matthew is due to film The Dallas Buyer's Club in September so has another six weeks to reach his goal weight for his portrayal of an HIV patient.
He said recently: 'I'm losing some weight. I've got a role coming up in the middle of September. I've lost about 15 pounds, I've gotta lose about 15 more.
'I am drinking a lot of tea. It takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself and that you're not going to give it something else from the outside.'
Meanwhile, his expectant wife Camila, 30, looked incredible as she posed alongside her leading man in a daring bandage dress
His co-star Gina Gershon and wife both stuck to a blue/green palette that tied nicely into the father-of-two's navy blue suit, it was such a good match that it was surely arranged to flatter the leading man.
But then this was Matthew's night, and an exciting one at that as this movie heralds a real departure from the rom-com roles we so associate him with.
In it he plays the titular Joe of the title, a sociopathic detective who kills people on request, and for a large amount of money.
'Just as Joe is about to leave, he spots Dottie, Chris' innocent younger sister.
'Joe makes Chris an offer, he'll keep Dottie as sexual collateral until the money is collected and his fee can be paid.'
Hardly How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days, but then McConaughey has always flirted with edgier roles, often with great success as in 2001's demon-packed Frailty.
And the reviews have been largely
positive, with most critics cheering the Texan smoothie in his
interesting change of direction.
Richard Corliss wrote in Time magazine: 'McConaughey's fans might be shocked to see him in this role - more likely, they'd skip the opportunity - but they ought to give his performance a shot. The dimpled demon lover proves he can be just as seductive playing Texas's creepiest, craziest cop.
Neil Young wrote in The Hollywood Reporter: 'Texas’ own Matthew McConaughey in fine sardonic form as the eponymous Joe – a West Dallas detective who operates a lucrative sideline as a hitman-for-hire.'
