Stay on target: Tom Cruise finds release from divorce turmoil by shooting a laser gun on the set of Oblivion

His life has been thrown into turmoil over the past few weeks with Katie Holmes's shock decision to file for divorce after five and a half years of marriage. 
But Tom Cruise may have found some much needed release today on the set of his new movie Oblivion. 
The 50-year-old star shot a large silver laser gun during the scene, which was filmed in the Mammoth Lakes area of California.

He seemed professional and focussed as he filmed the scene wearing a checked blue shirt and jeans.
At one point, the star was even seen laughing and smiling in a break from the action.
Earlier today, he was joined by his 17-year-old son Connor, who jetted in to support his famous father while he shot the film.

The actor, who has removed his wedding ring, was seen smiling and chatting to his son and the crew between takes, with the teenager clearly buoying his mood.
Connor was with his father on location in Iceland when news broke of Katie Holmes' shock decision to end her marriage to the star on Jun 29.
The move is understood to have blindsided the Mission Impossible action hero and he went on to spend a sober 50th birthday with his son and daughter Isabella in Los Angeles on July 3.

Katie, meanwhile, was spotted taking their daughter Suri, six, to the Central Park Zoo this afternoon.
She was accompanied by her own mother Kathleen on the outing.
Tom is understood to have not seen Suri since Katie filed for divorce, but speaks to her regularly over the phone.

The pair reached a divorce settlement earlier this week and Katie has reportedly made it clear that she is turning her back on Scientology and returning to Catholicism by signing up to a local church in New York.

But according to Star magazine, Tom still plans to keep Suri involved in his religion, despite reports Katie wants to keep her away from the controversial organization.
Both Connor and Isabella are devout Scientology followers, which has put a strain on their relationship with their mother, Nicole Kidman.
Tom filed for divorce from Nicole in 2001 after 11 years of marriage and the split had a profound effect on her relationship with their two adopted children.
Nicole, who now also has two young daughters with her new husband Keith Urban, has hinted at her heartbreak over the distance between them.
She said in 2010: 'They live with Tom, which was their choice. I'd love them to live with us but what can you do.'
Isabella revealed earlier this year that she only sees her mother 'sometimes'.
American magazine Us Weekly today reported that the 33-year-old sought counsel from Nicole, 45, in an effort to avoid the same fate as the Australian actress, who now rarely sees the teens.
